The national capital faced severe disruptions in flight operations at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Sunday, with about 10 flights diverted and over 100 facing delays due to dense fog causing low visibility. The thick fog, a result of the ongoing cold wave, has enveloped Delhi over the past three days, reaching the lowest minimum temperature of the winter season.
Challenges at Delhi Airport: Visibility at the airport was nearly zero between 4 am and 10 am, resulting in the suspension of flight departures and only 15 arrivals during that period. Typically managing around 60 departures and arrivals per hour under normal weather conditions, the airport experienced a significant reduction in capacity. Officials cited that the 10 diversions occurred because the pilots were not trained for CAT III landings on the concerned flights.
IMD’s Longest Duration of Dense Fog: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted that this season’s dense fog in Delhi has been the longest duration experienced so far, further complicating travel plans for passengers.
Airlines Respond to Disruptions: Major airlines operating at Delhi Airport acknowledged the challenges posed by the dense fog.
IndiGo: IndiGo Airlines released an official statement addressing the impact on their operations, stating, “Due to the low visibility and dense fog conditions across North India, IndiGo flight operations were impacted on January 14, 2024. This had a cascading effect on our operations throughout the day. Our staff kept passengers apprised of all delays and cancellations across airports and made every possible effort to facilitate the passengers. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers.”
Air India: Air India’s flight AI 185 to Vancouver faced rescheduling, leading to prolonged waiting times for passengers. The rescheduled departure is now expected around 11.30 pm, and affected passengers have been provided accommodation.
Vistara and Akasa Air: Vistara and Akasa Air also communicated potential disruptions in arrivals and departures from Delhi due to poor visibility.
Extended Fog Warning: As bone-chilling temperatures persist, the weather department issued an alert predicting the continuation of dense fog in isolated pockets of northwest India for the next three to four days. The advisory urged caution on highways, recommending careful driving with fog lights due to very dense fog reported in various regions.
