"Cold Wave Continues in North India, Disrupting Flights and Trains; Delhi Records 150 Flight Delays and 28 Train Disruptions"

In the midst of winter, northern parts of India grapple with persistent cold wave conditions and dense fog, causing disruptions in both air and rail travel. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), these chilly conditions are expected to prevail until January 27.

On Tuesday, Delhi experienced a minimum temperature of 6.9 degrees Celsius, slightly below the seasonal average. Foggy conditions significantly reduced visibility at observatories like Safdarjung, Palam, and Ayanagar. The IMD predicts moderate fog in the National Capital until January 26, with foggy conditions expected to persist on January 27 and 28.

Delhi has witnessed an unusual frequency of cold days and coldwave days in January, marking the highest in the past 13 years, as reported by PTI, citing IMD data. A cold wave is officially declared when the minimum temperature falls below 10°C over plains, and it is 4.5 to 6.4°C below normal, or the actual minimum temperature is less than 4°C. If the minimum temperature is over 6.5°C below normal or less than 2 degrees C, it is classified as a severe cold wave.

The adverse weather conditions have led to delays and disruptions in flight and passenger train operations to and from Delhi. Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport in Delhi experienced delays with over 150 flights affected on Tuesday, though only seven had to be canceled. Additionally, Northern Railways reported delays ranging from two to five hours for 28 trains due to dense fog.

The cold wave also affected Rajasthan, where a severe cold wave accompanied by dense fog impacted various parts of the state. Alwar witnessed a minimum temperature drop to 2.5 degrees Celsius. The IMD anticipates cold day to severe cold day conditions in isolated areas of West Rajasthan on Wednesday.

Other northern states, including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Uttarakhand, are expected to experience dense to very dense fog over the coming days, affecting visibility and travel.

The weather department has issued alerts for cold day to severe cold day conditions in isolated pockets of Uttarakhand and cold day conditions in specific areas on Wednesday.

As the cold wave persists, travelers are advised to stay updated on travel disruptions and take necessary precautions to navigate the challenging weather conditions.
