As a result of the cold wave-like conditions enveloping the National Capital Region (NCR), the Gautam Budh Nagar district magistrate, Manish Kumar Verma, issued an order on Wednesday to postpone the commencement of classes for students from nursery to class 8 in Noida and Greater Noida. The delayed start, effective from January 18, mandates that all schools, including those recognized by state boards, CBSE, ICSE, IB, UP Board, and others, begin their classes at 10 am until further notice.
The order, directed to the district basic education department, aligns with the prevailing weather conditions, characterized by dense fog and extreme cold. District magistrate Verma emphasized the necessity of the adjustment due to the ongoing cold wave, deviating from the typical winter schedule when government schools in the district usually operate from 9 am to 3 pm.
Gautam Budh Nagar’s basic education officer, Rahul Panwar, emphasized the strict enforcement of the directive among educational institutions.
Notably, classes for students from nursery to class 8 had been temporarily suspended until January 16 due to adverse weather conditions. Meanwhile, classes for students in classes 9 to 12 continued during this period, with altered timings from 10 am to 3 pm, following the basic education department’s instructions until January 20.
The minimum temperature in Gautam Budh Nagar was recorded at 6.0°C, with a maximum temperature of 18°C on Wednesday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD’s forecast indicates similar weather conditions in Gautam Budh Nagar until January 23, with temperatures ranging between 5-7 °C and 18-19 °C for minimum and maximum temperatures, respectively. Fog is also anticipated during this period.
Mahesh Palawat, vice president of climate and meteorology at private weather channel Skymet, explained that the Delhi-NCR region has been experiencing cold days characterized by cloudy weather, haze, and dense fog over the past week. While a marginal increase in both minimum and maximum temperatures is expected as the western disturbance subsides, Palawat noted that the winter chill is likely to persist. He also mentioned the possibility of decreased fog intensity in the coming days, allowing the sun to make an appearance as the fog lifts early, with another intense western disturbance anticipated around January 26.
