In a major boost to religious tourism and last-mile connectivity in Uttarakhand, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved two ropeway projects under the National Ropeways Development Programme – Parvatmala Pariyojana. The projects aim to provide seamless access to the Kedarnath temple and Hemkund Sahib, significantly reducing travel time and easing the journey for pilgrims.
Project Details
The two projects include:
- Sonprayag to Kedarnath Ropeway (12.9 km): Estimated at ₹4,081.28 crore, this ropeway will be built under the design, build, finance, operate, and transfer (DBFOT) model.
- Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib Ji Ropeway (12.4 km): Estimated at ₹2,730.13 crore, this project will follow the same DBFOT model.
The construction of both ropeways is expected to take between four and six years.
Use of Advanced Technology
Both ropeways will feature the tri-cable detachable gondola (3S) technology, capable of transporting 1,800 passengers per hour in each direction, translating to a daily capacity of up to 18,000 passengers.
Easing Pilgrim Journeys
Currently, reaching Hemkund Sahib Ji requires a 21-kilometre uphill trek from Govindghat, with travellers relying on foot, ponies, or palanquins. The new ropeway will provide an all-weather alternative, making the pilgrimage more accessible and convenient.
Similarly, the journey to Kedarnath temple involves a 16-kilometre trek from Gaurikund, which is currently covered on foot, by ponies, palanquins, or helicopters. The ropeway from Sonprayag to Kedarnath will enhance connectivity and improve the travel experience for devotees.
Government’s Vision
Announcing the decision, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the significance of these projects in improving accessibility and promoting tourism in Uttarakhand. The move is expected to provide a safer, faster, and eco-friendly transportation alternative while boosting local economies.
