
In a significant move towards workplace inclusivity, engineering and construction giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced a one-day paid menstrual leave for its women employees. The decision, revealed on Thursday, is set to benefit approximately 5,000 women employees at the company’s headquarters.
L&T Chairman and Managing Director S N Subrahmanyan made the announcement during a company event marking International Women’s Day. The policy, which is applicable only to employees of the parent company and not its subsidiaries in financial services or technology, is expected to be implemented immediately. Officials will soon finalize the details regarding its execution, sources said.
L&T employs around 60,000 people, with women making up about 9% of the workforce. The introduction of menstrual leave is seen as a progressive step, aligning L&T with a handful of companies like Swiggy and Zomato that have implemented similar policies in the past.
The move comes weeks after Subrahmanyan’s comments about employees working 90-hour weeks sparked controversy. The company later clarified that his remarks were aligned with its commitment to nation-building.
While some Indian states, including Bihar, Odisha, Sikkim, and Kerala, have provisions for menstrual leave for government employees, major corporate houses have largely refrained from adopting such policies. L&T’s decision marks a significant step in recognizing the needs of women in the workplace and promoting a more inclusive work environment.
The announcement has been widely appreciated, with many viewing it as a step toward better workplace policies for women. It remains to be seen if other large corporate houses will follow suit in implementing similar initiatives.
