Tata Motors Ltd is preparing to break ground on a significant new manufacturing facility for Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in Tamil Nadu. The ₹9,000 crore project, spanning over 400 acres of land near Panapakkam in Ranipet district, is slated to commence construction in September. The site, strategically located near the Chennai and Ennore ports, is set to become operational by late 2025 or early 2026.
This upcoming facility marks a milestone for JLR, as it will be the first instance of premium vehicles being fully manufactured in India, rather than just assembled. The plant will focus exclusively on producing electric vehicles (EVs) for JLR, while Tata Motors will utilize the same facility to manufacture a diverse range of vehicles, including hybrids.
The new plant will leverage the existing supply ecosystem of Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) and Renault Nissan Automotive India, alongside Tata’s own suppliers. This integrated approach aims to streamline component supply and production efficiency.
Currently, JLR assembles completely knocked-down (CKD) units of several models, including the Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Sport, Evoque, Jaguar F-PACE, and Land Rover Discovery Sport, at its Pune facility. The Tamil Nadu plant represents a strategic expansion of JLR’s manufacturing footprint in India, underscoring Tata Motors’ commitment to enhancing the local automotive industry and meeting the growing demand for electric and hybrid vehicles.
The development of this plant aligns with Tamil Nadu’s industrial growth strategy and provides a boost to the local economy, fostering job creation and advancing automotive manufacturing capabilities in the region.
