New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, upon his return to Delhi from his visits to France and the United Arab Emirates, immediately spoke to Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena to inquire about the progress in mitigating the flood-like situation in the capital.
As the water level of the Yamuna River continued to rise, PM Modi sought an update on the measures being taken to address the situation. Taking to Twitter, the Lieutenant Governor stated, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi called up as soon as he reached home and took a detailed account of the flood situation in Delhi and took complete information about the related efforts being made. He again instructed to do all possible work in the interest of the people of Delhi with the help and cooperation of the Centre.”
Earlier in the day, the Delhi government expressed optimism that the flood-like situation in the capital would improve by Sunday as the water level of the Yamuna River gradually receded. Efforts were underway by the Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) to pump out water, clean roads, and restore traffic movement as the water level continued to fall.
However, heavy rainfall later in the day raised concerns of further swelling of the Yamuna River. Consequently, several areas in Delhi and the national capital region experienced waterlogging, leading to traffic jams. The Delhi Traffic Police issued advisories regarding areas where traffic disruptions were expected due to rains and waterlogging.
The situation in Delhi escalated after the water levels in the Yamuna River reached a record high of 208.62 meters due to excessive water discharge from Haryana’s Hathinikund Barrage on Thursday. Authorities have been working tirelessly to alleviate the impact of the floods and ensure the safety and well-being of the residents.
With the Prime Minister closely monitoring the situation and emphasizing cooperation between the Centre and the Delhi government, efforts are being made to mitigate the flood-like situation and provide necessary assistance to the affected areas. As the water level recedes and the weather conditions stabilize, the focus remains on restoring normalcy and ensuring the welfare of the people in the capital.
