Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced on Monday that the long-awaited completion of the Mumbai-Goa highway is now expected by June 2025, bringing relief to commuters and boosting connectivity in the Konkan region.
Speaking at the Vasant Vyakhyanmala event organized by Amar Hind Mandal in Mumbai’s Dadar, Gadkari also made a bold prediction about India’s road network, claiming that in the next two years, India’s road infrastructure will surpass that of the United States.
The Mumbai-Goa highway project, plagued by delays for years, has been a major pain point for travellers due to pothole-ridden roads and slow progress. Gadkari acknowledged the challenges, citing legal disputes, land acquisition issues, and intra-family conflicts as key obstacles.
“There were fights among brothers, cases in courts, and endless complications in providing compensation for land. But those issues have now been resolved, and the work on the Mumbai-Goa highway has gained momentum,” he said.
Once completed, the highway is expected to significantly reduce travel time and boost tourism and trade in the coastal Konkan belt.
Physical Toll Booths to Be Phased Out
Gadkari also revealed plans to eliminate physical toll booths across India, replacing them with a new automated toll policy set to be unveiled within 15 days.
“The central government will soon introduce a new toll policy… Once implemented, there will be no reason for anyone to complain about tolls,” he said.
The new system will use satellite tracking and number plate recognition technology to automatically deduct toll charges directly from users’ bank accounts—an effort to make the system faster, fairer, and more efficient.
He also admitted that projects like the Delhi-Jaipur and Mumbai-Goa highways remain some of the department’s most difficult areas due to infrastructural and administrative challenges.
With the Mumbai-Goa highway nearing its long-awaited finish line, and sweeping changes promised in toll collection, Gadkari’s announcements signal a major push toward modernizing India’s highway network.
