OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has taken to social media to announce a fresh wave of hiring, calling on experts in infrastructure and large-scale computing systems to join the company at a pivotal time in its evolution.
“The scale of what’s happening at OpenAI right now is insane and we have very hard/interesting challenges,” Altman wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Please consider joining us! We could desperately use your help.”
Altman specifically reached out to individuals with experience in compiler design and programming language development, noting that OpenAI is keen to speak with professionals who “have thought about how to squeeze max performance out of a system.”
This call for talent comes shortly after OpenAI secured a massive $40 billion funding round, led by Masayoshi Son’s SoftBank Group and other major investors. The funding aims to accelerate development of next-generation AI tools and infrastructure, paving the path toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
The company’s ambitious plans are already taking shape through The Stargate Project, a sprawling data center initiative launched in collaboration with SoftBank’s Son and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison. The project was unveiled alongside former U.S. President Donald Trump during a White House press conference on January 21.
Stargate, designed to provide the backbone for OpenAI’s AI capabilities, is now in direct competition with Elon Musk’s Colossus—a rival supercomputing project from his AI startup xAI. Musk’s facility, currently under construction in Memphis, Tennessee, aims to be the largest in the world.
Adding to OpenAI’s momentum, the company’s flagship chatbot ChatGPT has seen a dramatic surge in usage. The user base is now speculated to have crossed one billion, boosted by viral trends such as AI-generated Studio Ghibli-style artwork that have captivated social media users worldwide.
As the race for AI supremacy heats up, Altman’s hiring pitch underlines the need for top-tier engineering talent to tackle the complex challenges ahead. For those with the right background, OpenAI’s call may represent a rare opportunity to shape the future of artificial intelligence.
