The Centre has approved ₹944.80 crore as part of the central share from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for Tamil Nadu, following the destruction caused by Cyclone Fengal, which hit the region on November 30. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) confirmed the release of the funds in two instalments to assist the state government in its relief efforts for the people affected by the cyclone.
The financial aid was approved after a request from the Tamil Nadu government, which is working to provide immediate relief to the victims of the cyclone, particularly in areas severely affected by floods and heavy winds. An official statement from the Ministry confirmed that the funds would help the state government in providing necessary assistance, such as shelter, food, and medical support to the affected populations.
In addition to this immediate relief, the Centre has assured Tamil Nadu of further financial support from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) once the on-ground assessment reports from the Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) are received. This team has been dispatched to the affected districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to evaluate the extent of the damage caused by Cyclone Fengal.
As per the MHA’s release, more than ₹21,718 crore has already been allocated across 28 states this financial year to support disaster relief efforts. This includes significant contributions from various disaster response funds, including ₹14,878 crore from the SDRF to 26 states, and ₹4,808 crore from the NDRF to 18 states.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin had earlier written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting ₹2,000 crore in immediate relief from the NDRF, citing the unprecedented devastation caused by the cyclone. In his letter, Stalin mentioned that more than 69 lakh families and 1.5 crore individuals across northern Tamil Nadu’s districts, including Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Kallakurichi, were severely impacted. The state government’s initial assessment estimated that ₹2,475 crore would be needed for restoration efforts.
The Tamil Nadu government has already mobilized resources to provide immediate assistance, with health and rescue teams working around the clock to support affected families. The Home Ministry also confirmed that all logistical assistance had been provided, including the deployment of NDRF teams, as well as Army and Air Force support teams to assist the affected states.
Underlining the government’s commitment to disaster management, the statement emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are actively overseeing the response and are determined to mitigate the hardships caused by the cyclone in Tamil Nadu and other affected regions.
As the situation evolves, the Centre has pledged to continue working closely with state governments to ensure that affected areas receive the necessary financial support and assistance.
