Nirvana Naturopathy & Retreat: Why Are We Always Tired Even When We Sleep Enough?

By Gurumaa Yogita Khatri | Founder, Nirvana Naturopathy & Retreat, Igatpuri, Nashik

Is It About Sleep or the Quality of Sleep?

You sleep for seven or eight hours, yet getting out of bed feels like a struggle. By midday, you are already tired. Your concentration drops, your body feels heavy, and another cup of tea or coffee seems like the only way to get through the day.

Does this sound familiar?

Many people experience this kind of tiredness and assume they simply need more sleep. But have you ever considered whether your sleep is restful, your diet is balanced, your stress levels are under control or your body is getting enough movement?

At Nirvana Naturopathy & Retreat, Igatpuri, Nashik, I believe that understanding our everyday habits is an important part of looking after our health. Constant tiredness should not simply be accepted as a normal part of a busy life.

Spending eight hours in bed does not always mean waking up refreshed. Think about someone who works late, checks messages before bedtime and goes to sleep with a head full of unfinished tasks. They may sleep for eight hours but still wake up exhausted.

Another person may wake up repeatedly during the night because of snoring or breathing difficulties without realising that their sleep is being disturbed. Both situations can leave someone feeling tired the next day.

Most adults need at least seven hours of sleep each night, although individual needs vary. Keeping a regular bedtime, creating a comfortable sleeping environment and reducing screen use before bed may help improve sleep habits.

If you regularly wake up tired despite allowing enough time for sleep, it is worth finding out why rather than assuming you simply need more rest.

Stress Can Leave You Exhausted

Have you ever gone to bed physically tired but found that your mind simply would not switch off?

Work deadlines, family responsibilities, financial worries and constant phone notifications can keep us thinking long after the day is over.

Stress can make it harder to fall asleep or stay asleep. Poor sleep then makes it more difficult to handle the next day’s challenges. Before long, the two can become a frustrating cycle.

Simple relaxation practices may help. Gentle yoga, comfortable breathing exercises, an evening walk or a little screen-free time before bed can help you unwind.

You do not need an elaborate routine. Start with something you can comfortably fit into your day and practise regularly.

Could Your Food Habits Be Affecting Your Energy?

Sometimes, we look for complicated solutions while overlooking what we eat every day.

Skipping meals, eating at irregular times or following restrictive diets can make it harder to meet your nutritional needs. Not drinking enough water may also contribute to tiredness.

Imagine someone who starts the morning with tea, rushes through lunch and depends on biscuits or sugary snacks to get through the afternoon. Such a routine may not provide the variety of nutrients needed for good health.

A balanced diet containing vegetables, fruits, whole grains, pulses, nuts and suitable protein sources can help meet the body’s nutritional needs.

Persistent fatigue, however, is not always caused by poor eating habits. Iron-deficiency anaemia, vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid disorders and other medical conditions can also cause low energy. Supplements should be taken when appropriate, with professional guidance.

Too Much Sitting Can Leave You Feeling Sluggish

Many of us spend hours sitting at a desk, travelling in a vehicle or looking at screens. By the time we get home, exercise is often the last thing on our minds.

Yet regular physical activity can support sleep, mood and overall health. You do not have to begin with a demanding workout. A daily walk, gentle stretching between work sessions or suitable yoga can be a good starting point.

Choose activities that suit your fitness level. If your fatigue is severe or you have an existing medical condition, speak with a healthcare professional before starting strenuous exercise.

How Can Naturopathy Help?

Naturopathy places importance on lifestyle habits that support general wellbeing. At Nirvana Naturopathy & Retreat, Igatpuri, Nashik, natural wellness practices may include suitable movement, nutrition guidance, relaxation and selected therapies based on individual needs.

Yoga and pranayama: Gentle yoga and appropriate breathing exercises may help with relaxation, flexibility and stress management. They can complement a healthy routine, although they are not a cure for ongoing fatigue.

Hydrotherapy: This involves using water at different temperatures and in different applications for therapeutic purposes. Some methods may promote relaxation, but they should be chosen according to a person’s health and individual needs.

Mud therapy: Mud packs are used in some naturopathy settings for external applications and relaxation. Clean, properly prepared material is important. Claims that mud therapy treats internal diseases are not well supported by scientific evidence.

Lifestyle counselling: Looking at sleep patterns, food choices, stress and daily activity can help identify habits worth changing. A realistic plan that fits your life is more useful than a strict routine you cannot maintain.

These practices may support wellbeing, but they cannot replace medical assessment or treatment when fatigue has an underlying medical cause.

A Healthy Millet Breakfast: Vegetable Ragi Chilla

You do not need expensive health foods to prepare a nutritious breakfast. Ragi, or finger millet, is a traditional Indian grain that can be used to make a simple, tasty chilla.

Ingredients

• ½ cup ragi flour

• 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion

• 2 tablespoons grated carrot

• A little grated ginger

• A pinch of cumin

• Salt to taste

• Water as needed

• A little oil for cooking

Method

Mix the ragi flour, vegetables, ginger, cumin and salt in a bowl. Add water gradually to make a smooth, pourable batter. Heat a lightly greased pan, pour in a small ladleful and spread it gently into a thin circle. Cook on medium heat until firm, then flip and cook the other side thoroughly.

Serve warm with mint chutney or plain curd, if suitable for your diet.

Ragi provides carbohydrates, fibre and minerals. The vegetables add variety, while pairing the chilla with curd or another suitable protein source can make the meal more balanced.

Millets are a useful addition to a varied diet, but no single food can cure persistent fatigue. If you regularly feel exhausted despite getting enough sleep, it is important to investigate the cause rather than relying on dietary changes alone.

When Should You Seek Medical Advice?

Feeling tired after a demanding day is normal. Feeling exhausted most days, even after enough sleep, deserves attention.

Persistent fatigue can be associated with sleep apnoea, anaemia, thyroid disorders, diabetes, infections, medication side effects, depression and other health conditions. A healthcare professional can review your symptoms and decide whether tests or further evaluation are needed.

Do not assume that you need a detox, a supplement or a natural therapy without first understanding what is causing the problem.

Seek urgent medical attention if fatigue occurs with chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion or sudden weakness.

Don’t Make Constant Tiredness Your Normal

If you wake up tired every morning, take a closer look at your sleep, stress levels, meals and daily activity. Make small changes where you can, but do not ignore symptoms that persist or interfere with everyday life.

At Nirvana Naturopathy & Retreat, Igatpuri, Nashik, my approach to natural wellness centres on healthier routines, responsible use of naturopathy practices and informed healthcare decisions.

You should not have to struggle through every day simply because you believe tiredness is part of a busy life. Listen to your body, understand what it needs and seek the right help when necessary.
