“India Reinstates Export of Non-Basmati White Rice Following Ban Lift”

India Lifts Ban on Non-Basmati White Rice Exports, Hailed as Game-Changer for Agricultural Sector

In a significant policy shift, the Indian government has lifted the ban on the export of non-basmati white rice effective immediately, as announced in a recent notification. The ban was originally imposed in July 2023 to ensure domestic rice supply and control prices amid concerns about food security.

Exporters have welcomed this decision, calling it a “game-changer” for the agricultural sector. Suraj Agarwal, CEO of Rice Villa, expressed optimism about the implications of this move. “India’s bold decision to lift restrictions on non-basmati white rice exports is a game-changer for the agricultural sector. This strategic move will not only boost the income of exporters but also empower farmers, who can expect higher returns with the impending arrival of the new kharif crop,” he stated.

The notification also revealed that the government has reduced the export duty on parboiled rice from 20 percent to 10 percent, further encouraging exporters to capitalize on international markets.

Keshab Kr Halder, an exporter from Halder Group, who had been advocating for the immediate removal of the ban, lauded the government’s action, emphasizing its positive impact on the rice industry.

As India reopens its doors to non-basmati white rice exports, stakeholders in the agricultural sector anticipate a boost in production, farmer income, and overall market dynamics, reflecting confidence in the government’s commitment to supporting the agricultural economy.
