Tourists Rescued After Falling Into Frozen Lake in Arunachal Pradesh, Rijiju Urges Caution

A chilling incident occurred at Arunachal Pradesh’s popular Sela Pass when a group of tourists fell into a frozen lake after the ice beneath them cracked unexpectedly. The group of four, including two women, found themselves in peril when the fragile ice gave way, sending them plunging into the freezing waters below.

The incident, which took place in the snow-covered region, a renowned winter destination, quickly sparked panic. However, quick-thinking bystanders equipped with bamboo sticks managed to rescue the tourists one by one, averting a potential tragedy. A video capturing the rescue operation has since gone viral on social media, bringing attention to the dangers of winter tourism in such remote and challenging locations.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, who hails from Arunachal Pradesh, shared the video on social media, urging fellow travelers to exercise caution when visiting areas with extreme conditions. “At Sela Pass in Arunachal Pradesh, my advice to tourists: Walk on frozen lakes with experienced people, drive carefully on slippery snow roads, and be aware of snow avalanches. The temperatures are freezing, so wear warm clothes and enjoy, but your safety is important,” Rijiju wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The incident has sparked a wave of discussions on social media about the risks associated with winter tourism, with many users sharing their personal experiences. One user recounted a similar incident in Ladakh, where the ice on the river broke underfoot, nearly resulting in a life-threatening situation. Another user reflected on their own experience at Sela Pass the previous year, where people fell through the ice as they ventured too far from the safe paths.

Authorities in the region have long been advising tourists to refrain from walking on frozen lakes due to the dangers posed by unstable ice. They have also encouraged visitors to follow safety rules and be prepared for the harsh conditions, especially in areas like Sela Pass, known for its unpredictable and hazardous terrain.

With the video continuing to circulate widely, the local administration hopes to spread awareness about the risks involved in winter tourism, especially in regions where icy waters and snowy landscapes create conditions that can quickly turn dangerous. Tourists are urged to prioritize their safety over the desire for adventure or photographs in such treacherous environments.

The local authorities, with support from community members and experienced guides, have emphasized the importance of safety measures in ensuring that no further incidents occur during the winter tourist season.
