Bengaluru Metro Welcomes India’s First Indigenous Driverless Train for Yellow Line

In a groundbreaking moment for India’s metro rail development, Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has unveiled its first indigenous driverless trainset for the Yellow Line, a milestone that showcases the country’s growing capabilities in urban transportation. The fully Made-in-India train, built by Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd at their Uttarpara facility in West Bengal, is poised to revolutionize public transit in the city.

The stainless steel train features cutting-edge automation and advanced performance features, marking a significant leap toward the future of urban mobility. The train will soon begin operations on the 18-kilometer Yellow Line, which connects Electronics City with other key areas in Bengaluru, providing a seamless and efficient commuting experience.

Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, hailed the achievement during a virtual event, emphasizing the progress India has made in metro rail technology. “This milestone reflects India’s progress in metro rail technology. With over 1,000 operational kilometers of metro rail, we now stand third globally and are on track to surpass the United States within five years,” he said.

Umesh Chowdhary, Managing Director of Titagarh Rail Systems, highlighted the importance of the driverless trainset. “This is the first stainless steel Metro train manufactured entirely in India for the Bengaluru Metro’s Yellow Line. It showcases our country’s capabilities in indigenisation and aligns with the vision of a self-reliant and developed India,” he stated.

Titagarh Rail Systems plans to deliver two additional trainsets by April 2025, with plans to ramp up production to supply two trains monthly by September. The Yellow Line trainsets are a crucial step in India’s ambition to become a global leader in rail manufacturing.

Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya expressed his congratulations to Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL), CRRC, and the BMRCL team for the successful roll-out of the driverless train. He also emphasized the significance of the initiative in boosting India’s manufacturing capabilities under the ‘Make in India’ program. “Titagarh will initially deliver one train set per month, and after a couple of months, two trains per month will be delivered. The Yellow Line of Bengaluru Metro will be commissioned as soon as possible,” he said.

The introduction of this indigenous driverless train represents a key achievement in the advancement of India’s metro rail technology, setting a precedent for future infrastructure projects and pushing the nation closer to its goal of being self-reliant in metro rail systems.
