IT giant Infosys has come under fire after reportedly laying off nearly 700 freshers from its Mysuru campus, according to claims made by the IT employees’ union, Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES). The terminations have sparked widespread outrage on social media, with netizens expressing shock and sympathy for the affected employees.
Many of the freshers, who had waited over two years after graduation to join Infosys in September 2024, now find themselves jobless just six months later. For these young professionals, the news has been devastating, leaving them scrambling to find a way home while grappling with the harsh reality of their uncertain future.
Union Calls Layoffs “Unethical”
NITES president Harpreet Singh Saluja criticized Infosys’ actions, calling the layoffs “shocking and unethical.” In a statement, he alleged that the company even deployed “bouncers and security personnel” during the termination process to intimidate employees.
“This is a betrayal of trust. These freshers had pinned their hopes on Infosys after waiting for years to begin their careers. Being let go so suddenly is not just unfair but also cruel,” said Saluja.
Social Media Outrage
Social media platforms have been flooded with posts condemning the layoffs, with many users expressing anger at Infosys for allegedly abandoning its fresh recruits during challenging economic times.
One X (formerly Twitter) user wrote, “This is truly heartbreaking. These freshers waited 2-2.5 years after receiving their offer letters from #Infosys and finally joined in September 2024. Now, after just six months, nearly 700 of them have been laid off. Many might have turned down other opportunities for this—only to face this devastating reality.”
Another user described the scene as “the most devastating photo in recent times,” referring to images of freshers leaving Infosys’ Mysuru campus with their belongings, visibly distressed.
A third post reflected on the broader implications of mass layoffs, stating, “Many young college graduates and professionals will have to endure layoffs. 2025 is going to be a tough economic year. Layoffs can have a big negative impact on people’s lives, incomes, and even marriages.”
The Bigger Picture
The mass layoffs at Infosys come amid growing concerns about job insecurity in the IT sector, as global economic conditions and cost-cutting measures continue to affect employment trends. Many industry experts have warned that 2025 could see further layoffs, impacting young professionals who are just beginning their careers.
Despite the backlash, Infosys has not yet released an official statement addressing the claims made by NITES or the reasoning behind the mass layoffs. However, employees and industry observers continue to demand transparency and accountability from one of India’s largest IT firms.
As the situation unfolds, the affected employees are left searching for new opportunities, while the broader IT industry watches closely to see how companies will handle recruitment and job security in the months to come.
