In a symbolic gesture of unity and reverence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged with a delegation from the Muslim community on Thursday, presenting them with a ceremonial ‘chadar’ intended to be placed at the Ajmer Sharif Dargah. The occasion was part of an event commemorating the 812th annual Urs of the esteemed Sufi saint, Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti.
Sharing the moment on social media, PM Modi wrote, “Met a Muslim community delegation. During our interaction, I presented the sacred Chadar, which will be placed during the Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti at the esteemed Ajmer Sharif Dargah.” In the images shared, the Prime Minister is seen engaging with the delegation and presenting the ceremonial cloth.
The delegation, consisting of about 10 members, posed for photographs with the Prime Minister and a framed painting. Union Minister of Minority Affairs Smriti Irani and BJP’s minority morcha president Jamal Siddiqui were also present at the meeting, highlighting the inclusive nature of the event.
The 812th annual Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti commenced on January 8, with the Gori family from Bhilwara raising the flag on January 7, as reported by TOI.
Amid preparations for the significant Urs, the Khadims of the Ajmer Dargah sent a letter to Prime Minister Modi, seeking his intervention to ensure the safety and security of those attending the Urs from January 13 to 21, as reported by The Siasat Daily.
Sarwar Chisty, the secretary of the representative body Anjuman Syed Zadgan, emphasized the inclusive nature of the Urs, stating, “People from all over the world, irrespective of caste, creed, color, and religion, will be visiting the shrine to celebrate the Urs.”
In the coming days, Kalandars from Delhi are expected to present their offerings at the dargah, continuing a longstanding tradition. A special train from the Atari border will bring a Pakistani delegation of devotees to Ajmer on January 14.
The formal Urs proceedings will commence with the moon sightings, and the ‘jannati darwaja’ will be unlocked for devotees. The dargah has been accessible throughout the day since Tuesday, accommodating the increasing number of devotees paying homage to Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti.
