“OpenAI to Restrict ChatGPT Image Generation as GPUs Overheat, Says Sam Altman”

OpenAI to Temporarily Limit ChatGPT Image Generation as GPU Usage Surges

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced temporary rate limits on ChatGPT’s image-generation feature, citing overwhelming demand that is straining the company’s graphics processing units (GPUs).

The restriction comes after OpenAI’s latest AI model, GPT-4o, introduced an advanced image-generation capability that quickly gained massive traction. Social media users widely adopted the tool, producing Studio Ghibli-inspired images and other creative visuals, leading to a surge in requests.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Altman acknowledged the strain on the company’s hardware. “It’s super fun seeing people love images in ChatGPT. But our GPUs are melting. We are going to temporarily introduce some rate limits while we work on making it more efficient. Hopefully won’t be long! ChatGPT free tier will get 3 generations per day soon,” he wrote.

Rate Limits and Accessibility

While the exact limits were not initially specified, OpenAI has already rolled back access to free-tier users, now restricting them to only three image generations per day. The feature remains fully available to subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, and Select plans.

In a follow-up post, Altman acknowledged that OpenAI was “refusing some generations that should be allowed” and assured users that the issue was being addressed as quickly as possible.

About GPT-4o’s Image Generation

OpenAI has called GPT-4o’s image-generation tool its “most advanced image generator yet.” The company says the model delivers “precise, accurate, photorealistic outputs,” and excels at rendering text accurately, following detailed prompts, and modifying uploaded images.

According to OpenAI, the tool allows users to create “exactly the image you envision” to enhance communication and creative expression. However, due to overwhelming demand, the company is now working to optimize its efficiency and balance the GPU load.

Despite the temporary limits, OpenAI has assured users that full functionality will be restored soon as they work on scaling their infrastructure.
