Sam Altman Urges Users to Slow Down as AI-Generated Ghibli-Style Art Overwhelms OpenAI

Sam Altman Calls for a Pause as OpenAI’s Ghibli-Style AI Art Takes Over the Internet

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has urged users to slow down on generating AI-powered Studio Ghibli-style images as the trend has taken social media by storm, overwhelming the company’s systems.

For decades, Studio Ghibli’s hand-drawn animation has mesmerized audiences with its nostalgic and whimsical style. Now, thanks to OpenAI’s latest image generation tool integrated into ChatGPT, that signature aesthetic is being recreated by AI—flooding profile pictures, memes, and even movie posters across platforms like X (formerly Twitter).

As demand skyrocketed, Altman posted on X, saying, “Please chill on generating images,” calling the surge in usage “insane” and joking that the OpenAI team “needs sleep.” The unexpected viral explosion forced OpenAI to impose temporary restrictions on image generation. Free-tier users, who previously had unlimited access, are now capped at three images per day, while paid subscribers—including ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, and Select users—retain broader access.

OpenAI’s GPUs Under Pressure

The rapid surge in AI image generation has also put immense strain on OpenAI’s hardware. Altman revealed that the company’s GPUs (graphics processing units) were “melting” under the pressure, prompting the introduction of temporary rate limits. He assured users that the team was working on making the tool more efficient and that the restrictions would hopefully be lifted soon.

Responding to a user who inquired about Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) development, Altman quipped, “It will come sooner if you stop using our GPUs to make images.”

OpenAI’s Most Advanced Image Generator

OpenAI has described its new tool, powered by GPT-4o, as its most advanced image generator yet. It offers greater realism, improved accuracy, better text rendering, and enhanced object relationships. Unlike its predecessor, DALL-E, which generated images in a single pass, GPT-4o builds images step by step, resulting in finer details.

However, the rollout has not been entirely smooth. OpenAI had to delay free user access and address a bug that caused inconsistencies in image generation.

Amid the chaos, Altman humorously acknowledged the irony of his work, stating that after spending years developing superintelligence, he now wakes up to hundreds of AI-generated Ghibli-style images of himself circulating online.
