Indian submarine INS Vagir is poised to make its maiden extended range deployment to Fremantle, Australia, arriving on Sunday. This deployment marks a significant step for the Indian Navy and underscores its submarine capabilities. INS Vagir, the fifth submarine of the Kalvari class, was commissioned into the Indian Navy in January 2023. While not participating in the ongoing 10-day Malabar exercises, the submarine’s deployment highlights the Navy’s reach and operational capacity.
“The extended range deployment is the maiden deployment by an Indian Navy submarine to Australia and showcases the capability and professional acumen of the navy to undertake sustained operations at extended ranges from the base port (Mumbai) for prolonged durations,” the Indian Navy stated.
During its time in Australia, INS Vagir will engage in various exercises with units of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) along the country’s west coast. This development coincides with the ongoing Malabar exercises, in which the navies of India, the US, Japan, and Australia are participating off the east coast of Australia.
The deployment will include basic, intermediate, and advanced-level anti-submarine exercises. Furthermore, the RAN submarine and the Indian Naval P-8I aircraft are scheduled to conduct joint exercises with INS Vagir, enhancing collaboration and synergy between the Indian Navy and RAN.
On its journey to Australia, INS Vagir had previously visited Colombo as part of the International Day of Yoga celebrations on June 21, adding a cultural and diplomatic dimension to its mission.
In related developments, India’s Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approved the procurement of three additional Scorpene submarines in July. This decision follows an earlier deal through which Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) constructed six Scorpene or Kalvari class submarines, in collaboration with France’s Naval Group, under the ₹23,562-crore Project-75 program.
