"Former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur to Receive Posthumous Bharat Ratna"

In a significant announcement, the Rashtrapati Bhavan revealed on Monday that the late socialist leader and former Chief Minister of Bihar, Karpoori Thakur, will be honored with the prestigious Bharat Ratna posthumously. Often referred to as ‘Jannayak’ by his followers, Thakur was a prominent figure known for his dedicated efforts to empower and uplift backward castes.

Born on January 24, 1924, Karpoori Thakur played a crucial role in India’s freedom struggle and was imprisoned during the Quit India Movement against British rule. His political journey began with a victory in the 1952 elections, and remarkably, he never faced defeat in any subsequent elections throughout his career.

One of Thakur’s notable contributions was in 1978 when he initiated reservations for backward castes in government services in Bihar. This groundbreaking move laid the foundation for the eventual implementation of the Mandal Commission report in 1990, a significant step toward social justice and empowerment.

Serving as the Chief Minister of Bihar from December 1970 to June 1971 and later from December 1977 to April 1979, Karpoori Thakur left an indelible mark on Indian politics. His dedication to the cause of marginalized communities and his relentless pursuit of equality earned him the title of ‘Jan Nayak’ (People’s Leader).

Karpoori Thakur passed away on February 17, 1988, but his legacy continues to influence and inspire. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his delight at the decision to confer the Bharat Ratna on Thakur. In a social media post, the Prime Minister acknowledged Thakur’s enduring efforts as a champion for social justice, equality, and empowerment.

The posthumous recognition of Karpoori Thakur with the Bharat Ratna is a fitting tribute to a leader who dedicated his life to the service of the people and the upliftment of the underprivileged. As the nation marks his birth centenary, this prestigious honor stands as a testament to Thakur’s lasting impact on the ideals of justice and equality.
