Ford Motor Company has announced its decision to resume operations at its manufacturing plant in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, signaling a strategic re-entry into the Indian market. This move marks a significant development, as the company had exited the Indian market in 2021 due to challenges in domestic sales and ceased exports in 2022.
In a statement released on Friday, Ford revealed that it has submitted a letter of intent to the Tamil Nadu state government regarding the reopening of the Chennai plant. This decision comes just two days after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin disclosed that discussions were underway to revive manufacturing operations in the state.
The Chennai facility, which had been closed for two years, will now be repurposed to focus on producing vehicles exclusively for export markets. This shift aligns with Ford’s strategy to leverage its manufacturing capabilities in India for global export opportunities rather than domestic sales.
Fordโs exit from the Indian market in 2021 followed difficulties in achieving significant sales volumes. The company had struggled to compete in a market dominated by Asian rivals, leading to its decision to halt local production and exports.
The specifics regarding the models to be produced and additional details about the manufacturing plans will be disclosed at a later date. Ford’s move to reopen the Chennai plant underscores its commitment to tapping into international markets and expanding its global footprint.
