Delhi, India: As the winter break comes to an end, schools in Delhi are gearing up to resume physical classes on January 15. In light of the ongoing dense fog situation, a precautionary measure has been implemented, ensuring no classes will commence before 9 am and after 5 pm. The decision aims to address safety concerns for students and staff during the prevailing weather conditions.
The announcement comes after the Delhi education minister, Atishi, extended the winter break until January 12 due to the severe cold wave in the national capital. Atishi had earlier stated that schools in Delhi, catering to students from nursery to class 5, would remain closed for an additional five days.
The weather conditions have posed challenges, with Delhi recording its coldest morning on Sunday, with the minimum temperature dropping to 3.5 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported very dense fog and cold wave conditions persisting for over two days, predicting the possibility of dense fog until January 20.
To ensure the safety of students and staff commuting to schools during the challenging weather, the decision to restrict classes during specific hours is part of the efforts to mitigate potential risks. All teaching and non-teaching staff have been instructed to resume their duties as usual.
The Palam Observatory near the Indira Gandhi International Airport reported zero visibility due to dense fog, marking the longest duration of such conditions this season. The situation will be closely monitored as schools reopen, prioritizing the well-being of everyone involved in the educational process.
