In response to the devastating impact of recent heavy rainfall in Delhi, the state government has announced a compensation package of ₹10 lakhs for the families of those who lost their lives. The announcement, made by Minister Atishi on Sunday, aims to provide support to affected families following the tragic events caused by intense monsoon showers on June 28.
According to reports from PTI, the rainfall-related death toll has climbed to 11, with six fatalities recorded on Saturday alone, including four children. The downpour, which resulted in severe waterlogging across various parts of the city, disrupted normal life and led to tragic incidents.
Delhi received a staggering 228.1mm of rainfall on June 28, marking the highest single-day rainfall in June since 1936, as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The heavy rains resulted in tragic incidents such as two boys drowning in a waterlogged underpass in Badli, northwest Delhi, and a 60-year-old man losing his life along with his scooter in another underpass in Okhla.
Friday’s rainfall also led to a construction site accident in Vasant Vihar, where a wall collapse claimed the lives of three laborers. Additionally, the roof of the T1 terminal at the Indira Gandhi International Airport collapsed due to the deluge, resulting in the tragic death of a cab driver and injuries to several others.
As Delhi continues to face the aftermath of these tragic events, the IMD has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in the city until July 2, cautioning residents and authorities alike. Minister Atishi, besides announcing compensation, also inspected the Chandrawal Water Treatment Plant, which suffered flooding damage disrupting water supply to many parts of Central Delhi.
The Delhi government, through its swift response and financial assistance, aims to provide immediate relief to the affected families and address the challenges posed by the unprecedented rainfall and its aftermath across the capital city.
