India’s defence exports have skyrocketed in the past decade, with the country achieving a record Rs 21,000 crore in exports, marking a ten-fold increase from Rs 2,000 crore in 2013. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced the milestone during his address at the Army War College in Mhow Cantonment, Madhya Pradesh, where he outlined the ambitious target of raising annual defence exports to Rs 50,000 crore by 2029.

“Our defence exports, which were around Rs 2,000 crore a decade ago, have crossed the record figure of Rs 21,000 crore today. We have set an export target of Rs 50,000 crore by 2029,” Singh said, highlighting India’s strides toward becoming a global hub for defence manufacturing. He emphasized the government’s commitment to bolstering self-reliance, or “aatmanirbhar Bharat,” to enhance India’s standing on the world stage.

The defence minister also addressed the shifting dynamics of modern warfare, noting the growing significance of unconventional methods, including information warfare, artificial intelligence (AI)-based warfare, cyber-attacks, and electromagnetic and space warfare. Singh stressed that military personnel must be well-trained and equipped to combat these emerging threats.

Singh outlined the government’s vision of strengthening India’s defence capabilities through innovation and self-reliance, noting the role of future defence attaches in promoting national interests globally. He reiterated that India’s economic growth and national security are deeply interconnected, with a strong economy being essential for robust security and vice versa.

Singh also lauded the role of the Army War College in training military leaders and contributing to military diplomacy through its training programs for officers from friendly countries. The College’s global footprint and the significance of its contributions to warfare strategy were also highlighted during his visit.

In closing, Singh expressed confidence in India’s future as a global leader in defence manufacturing and its determination to expand its export capabilities in the coming years. The defence exports target of Rs 50,000 crore by 2029 reflects India’s long-term vision for strengthening its position in the global defence sector.
