In a world where technology and smartphones are often seen as inseparable from daily life, one Chinese woman has managed to break free from her phone for an impressive eight hours, winning a unique competition designed to encourage mindfulness and digital detox. The contest, held in Chongqing, southwest China, challenged participants to disconnect from their phones and spend the day in a controlled environment.
Dong, a sales manager at a finance firm, emerged victorious from a pool of ten contestants, taking home a prize of 10,000 yuan (approximately ₹1,16,820). The competition, organized by an undisclosed organization, aimed to highlight the growing dependence on digital devices and promote the benefits of mindfulness.
The rules were strict: participants were required to surrender their phones and spend the entire eight hours on a designated bed. They could only leave the bed for short, five-minute toilet breaks, and meals and drinks were provided in bed. Contestants were also prohibited from falling into a deep sleep or showing signs of anxiety. Wrist straps monitored their sleep and anxiety levels during the challenge.
While some may have found the contest challenging, Dong remained calm throughout, managing to stay relaxed and focused. She scored an impressive 88.99 out of 100, attributing her success to her minimal phone usage in everyday life. Dong, who is also known for tutoring her child instead of mindlessly scrolling on her phone, embraced the challenge with ease. Her relaxed approach earned her the nickname “pyjama sister” on social media, as she wore pyjamas throughout the competition to enhance her comfort.
The contest sparked interest on Chinese social media, with many users expressing curiosity and amusement. Some even showed enthusiasm about joining the challenge, with one comment saying, “I want to join the competition. It seems so interesting and not challenging at all.”
Dong’s victory serves as a reminder of the importance of digital detox and the potential benefits of taking a break from the constant connectivity that modern life demands. Her calm demeanor and ability to disconnect have inspired many to reconsider their own relationships with technology.
