Chandigarh’s Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport faced a tumultuous second day with dense fog and low visibility, causing disruptions in operations, leading to the cancellation of 13 flights and delays for 26 others.
This episode followed a challenging day on Friday when adverse weather conditions resulted in the cancellation of 14 flights, posing significant operational hurdles and impacting numerous scheduled departures, significantly inconveniencing travelers.
Several IndiGo flights, such as 6E681 to Pune, 6E2193 to Delhi, 6E7413 to Jaipur, and 6E6395 to Ahmedabad, bore the brunt of these cancellations. The list expanded to include more IndiGo flights, along with Vistara’s UK 669 to Delhi, impacting both departing and arriving flights due to extremely poor visibility.
Moreover, 15 departure flights faced delays, and 11 arrival flights were held up until 10 pm, as reported by airport authorities.
Regrettably, Chandigarh may not see a swift reprieve from this foggy ordeal, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast. An orange alert for dense fog was in place for January 6 and 7, with expectations of a subsequent yellow alert for the following three days.
The IMD predicted the potential arrival of a fresh Western Disturbance on January 8, possibly resulting in light rain on January 9. However, no substantial temperature changes are anticipated.
Though cloudy weather and light drizzles may briefly alleviate dense fog, moderate fog is expected to persist. IMD officials explained that clear skies allow emitted heat to escape, causing cooler temperatures, while clouds trapping the heat lead to warmer nights.
Over the next two days, Chandigarh anticipates predominantly cloudy skies with dense to very dense fog in the morning and night hours. The maximum temperature is forecasted between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius, with the minimum temperature hovering around 7 and 9 degrees Celsius during the subsequent three days.
