In a significant move to enhance clean energy production and regional energy security, Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) and the Adani Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop hydropower projects with a combined capacity of 5,000 megawatts (MW). The agreement, announced in Thimphu, marks a milestone in the ongoing collaboration between the two entities and builds on their existing partnership for the 570/900 MW Wangchhu Hydropower Project.
The MoU was signed by DGPC’s Managing Director, Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, and Naresh Telgu, the Chief Operating Officer of Adani Green Hydro Ltd., in the presence of Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay and Energy Minister Lyonpo Gem Tshering.
The Wangchhu Hydropower Project, in which DGPC holds a 51% majority stake and Adani holds the remaining 49%, serves as the foundation for this broader collaboration. The new agreement outlines the development of several additional hydropower and pumped storage projects, which will be taken forward in phases. Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) will be prepared to guide the implementation of these projects, which will contribute to Bhutan’s renewable energy capacity and regional energy integration.
Naresh Telgu, speaking on behalf of Adani Group, emphasized the company’s commitment to clean energy infrastructure. “This partnership reflects our deep commitment to developing clean energy infrastructure that enhances regional energy security,” he stated. Telgu also highlighted the importance of harnessing Bhutan’s hydropower potential to export reliable green energy to India, showcasing the potential for cross-border collaboration in achieving shared sustainable development goals.
Dasho Chhewang Rinzin echoed similar sentiments, stressing that the partnership would strengthen Bhutan’s energy collaboration with India. “This strategic partnership with Adani will further strengthen our very strong engagement with the Government of India in harnessing Bhutan’s abundant hydropower resources, which is considered as the cornerstone of the exemplary and friendly relations between our two countries,” he said.
DGPC, which has decades of experience in managing Bhutan’s renewable energy resources, has played a crucial role in the country’s energy landscape. Through this partnership, DGPC aims to expand Bhutan’s hydropower capacity while securing a stronger foothold in the regional energy market.
The Adani Group’s involvement will also ensure that Bhutan can scale up its hydropower capacity and gain access to Indian energy markets. This collaboration will help facilitate reliable power offtake and integration into India’s commercial power markets, making Bhutan an integral player in regional energy trade.
This partnership is strongly supported by the Royal Government of Bhutan and the Government of India, reinforcing the shared vision for clean energy growth and economic integration between the nations. The hydropower projects align with Bhutan’s Renewable Energy Roadmap, which targets an additional 20,000 MW of generation capacity by 2040, solidifying Bhutan’s commitment to becoming a leader in sustainable energy.
In conclusion, the MoU between DGPC and the Adani Group represents a major step forward in Bhutan’s clean energy journey, demonstrating the potential for collaboration between countries in the pursuit of sustainable development and regional energy security.
