As Mumbai faces a sharp rise in dengue cases, industrialist Anand Mahindra has proposed an unconventional solution to address the crisis. On Saturday, Mahindra, the Chairman of the Mahindra Group, shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) showcasing a compact, laser-powered cannon designed to target mosquitoes.
The device, invented by a Chinese engineer, operates similarly to a small-scale anti-missile defense system. It uses radar technology adapted from an electric car to detect mosquitoes and a laser pointer to eliminate them. The engineer behind the invention has even kept a detailed record of the mosquitoes killed, known as the ‘Death Note.’
In his post, Mahindra expressed his interest in acquiring this innovative device to help combat the rising dengue cases in Mumbai. He wrote, “With dengue on the rise in Mumbai, I’m trying to figure out how to acquire this miniature cannon, invented by a Chinese man, which can seek out & destroy mosquitoes!”
The Iron Dome, a well-known mobile air defense system developed by Israel, is designed to intercept and neutralize short-range threats. Mahindra’s reference to this system highlights the advanced technology used in the mosquito-destroying device, emphasizing its potential effectiveness against the dengue outbreak.
Mumbai has been struggling with an increase in mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue, chikungunya, and leptospirosis. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has reported a significant rise in cases in early August, underscoring the urgent need for effective solutions.
The suggestion of using the laser cannon has garnered attention on social media, with some users praising the idea and suggesting its potential as a business opportunity. One user commented, “You just gave me a billionaire business idea,” reflecting the excitement around this innovative approach.
As Mumbai continues to battle the surge in mosquito-borne diseases, Mahindra’s proposed solution highlights the need for creative and technologically advanced methods to address public health challenges.
