India has strongly criticized the European Parliament’s adoption of a resolution on the human rights situation in Manipur, referring to it as interference in its internal affairs and reflective of a “colonial mindset.” The Indian government reiterated that Manipur is an “internal matter” and emphasized that authorities at all levels are actively addressing the situation and working towards maintaining peace and harmony.
The resolution by the European Parliament comes at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a two-day visit to France, where he is the Guest of Honour at the country’s Bastille Day Parade. The Indian foreign ministry spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, stated that the European Parliament’s discussion and adoption of the resolution on developments in Manipur were deemed unacceptable and represented a colonial-era mentality.
“Indian authorities at all levels, including the judiciary, are seized of the situation in Manipur and are taking steps to maintain peace and harmony and law and order. The European Parliament would be well advised to utilize its time more productively on its internal issues,” Bagchi emphasized.
India had already made its position clear before the debate on the situation in Manipur took place in the European Parliament. Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra highlighted that the matter is “absolutely” internal to India, emphasizing that it is an internal affair and not subject to external interference.
The resolution, titled “India, the situation in Manipur,” was passed at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. It raised concerns about the violence in Manipur and called upon Indian authorities to take necessary measures to promptly halt the ongoing ethnic and religious violence and protect all religious minorities, particularly Manipur’s Christian community. The resolution also urged the central government and political actors to restore calm through inclusive dialogue involving civil society and the affected communities.
Furthermore, the European Parliament requested authorities to allow independent investigations into the violence and called for the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, which it deemed unlawful.
The northeastern state of Manipur has been grappling with ethnic clashes since May 3, resulting in the loss of over 80 lives. The clashes were triggered by a solidarity march organized by tribals protesting against the demand for Scheduled Tribe status by the Meitei community.
India remains firm in its stance that it is fully committed to addressing the situation in Manipur and upholding peace and harmony in the region. The government’s response to the European Parliament’s resolution underscores its position on internal affairs and reinforces its determination to resolve issues internally without external interference.
