“Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha Shares Reasons for Not Having Children: Concerns About Life Impact”

Zerodha's Nikhil Kamath Discusses Childlessness and Philanthropy in Recent Podcast Episode

Nikhil Kamath, the co-founder of Zerodha, shared his thoughts on parenthood, legacy, and philanthropy in a recent episode of his podcast, WTF. Kamath expressed his decision not to have children, citing concerns about the time commitment and uncertainties of parenting.

In the podcast, Kamath mentioned that he doesn’t resonate with the traditional idea of having children to carry on a legacy. He emphasized prioritizing his current pursuits and questioned the concept of leaving behind a legacy after death.

“This is also partly why I don’t have kids,” Kamath said. “I’m going to ruin 18-20 years of my life babysitting this child and then if luck serves me right, the reverse will happen at some point. What if he says ‘screw you’ at 18 and leaves anyway.”

When discussing legacy, Kamath highlighted his belief that individual importance is often overestimated. He emphasized living well, being kind to others, and not being overly concerned with being remembered after death.

Despite not having children, Kamath is deeply involved in philanthropy. Last year, he became the youngest Indian signatory to The Giving Pledge, a commitment to donating a majority of one’s wealth to charitable causes. Kamath credits fellow philanthropists in Bengaluru, including Nandan Nilekani, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, and Azim Premji, as inspirations for his philanthropic journey.

Kamath stressed the importance of understanding mortality and maximizing the positive impact of one’s wealth during their lifetime. He expressed a preference for directing resources towards causes he believes in rather than accumulating wealth for the future.
