Food delivery giant Zomato has issued a statement addressing the growing concerns about suspicious “one-dish” restaurants on its platform, which were reportedly selling items with vague names at high prices. These restaurants, some of which listed items like “Naughty Strawberry” and “Merry Berry,” had raised suspicion among users who feared that the dishes were code names for illicit items such as drugs or vapes.
In its response, Zomato stated that they had identified and removed the restaurants in question from their platform. “We have identified all such restaurants that were potentially fraudulent and have delisted them from our platform. To solve this more comprehensively, we have also investigated all other restaurants which have a very limited menu on Zomato and might have listed prohibited items or worked around a way to list prohibited items,” the company said.
Zomato further assured users that its policies require all restaurants listed on the platform to have a valid Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) license, and the platform actively blocks items like alcohol, cigarettes, cigars, and vapes from being sold.
The controversy surrounding the so-called “one-dish” restaurants first gained attention when users noticed that many of these outlets were offering only one dish, often priced at exorbitant rates. In many cases, the names of these dishes, such as “Blue Adventure” or “Citrus Punch,” were vague and left users guessing about the actual contents. Some users on social media speculated that these names could be references to vape flavours, while others raised concerns about possible drug delivery services or money laundering activities.
Zomato acknowledged that some of these restaurants had managed to bypass their checks by using generic or misleading names for their offerings. “We have further strengthened our fraud checks to proactively identify such cases to avoid similar incidents in the future,” the company spokesperson added.
While the “one-dish” restaurants were not directly linked to any illegal activities, Zomato’s swift action to investigate and delist suspicious establishments reflects its commitment to maintaining a safe and trustworthy platform for customers. The company also reassured users that it would continue to enhance its fraud detection mechanisms to prevent any future violations.
This incident highlights the growing concerns around the regulation of online food delivery platforms and the potential for misuse. Zomato’s response demonstrates its proactive approach to addressing these issues and ensuring that only legitimate and legal businesses operate on its platform.
