A historic gold watch, once owned by John Jacob Astor, the wealthiest passenger aboard the ill-fated Titanic, has fetched a staggering sum of £1.17 million ($1.46 million) at an auction in England. The sale, conducted by auctioneers Henry Aldridge & Son, set a record for the highest amount paid for an item associated with the tragic 1912 Titanic disaster.
The auction, which attracted significant attention from collectors and enthusiasts, saw a fierce bidding war that culminated in a US buyer securing the prized timepiece. The final bid far surpassed the auctioneer’s initial estimate of between £100,000 and £150,000, underscoring the enduring fascination and value attached to Titanic-related artifacts.
The gold watch, intricately engraved with the initials JJA, was a possession of John Jacob Astor, a prominent American business magnate. Astor, aged 47 at the time, tragically perished when the Titanic sank in the early hours of April 15, 1912. His wealth and stature in society made him one of the most recognizable figures aboard the ill-fated ship.
During the disaster, Astor famously assisted his wife, Madeleine, onto a lifeboat before meeting his own fate. Miraculously, Madeleine survived the ordeal, while Astor’s body was discovered a week later, with the watch among his personal effects.
“The watch itself was completely restored after being returned to Colonel Astor’s family and worn by his son,” stated the auction house, highlighting the historical significance and meticulous preservation of the timepiece.
The sale of Astor’s gold watch not only commemorates the tragic events of the Titanic disaster but also serves as a testament to the enduring allure and historical value of artifacts connected to this iconic maritime tragedy.
