Union Budget Sets Aside ₹2 Crore for Data Protection Board Setup and Salaries

In the Union Budget for FY25, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has been allocated ₹2 crore for the establishment and operational expenses of the Data Protection Board (DPB). This allocation is intended to cover both capital and revenue expenditures, ensuring the board’s effective functioning and oversight in data protection matters.

Of the total ₹2 crore, ₹4 lakh has been earmarked for capital expenditure. This portion will be used to set up fixed assets, including the development of a digital portal essential for the board’s operations. The remaining ₹1.96 crore is designated for revenue expenditure, primarily covering salaries and other operational costs.

The Data Protection Board is a pivotal body for implementing the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, which was officially notified in the gazette in August 2023. The board will be tasked with overseeing compliance with data protection regulations, addressing personal data breaches, and responding to user complaints.

The DPB will consist of a chairperson and members, whose appointments and salaries will be determined by the central government. This structure is designed to enhance accountability and ensure effective management of data protection issues.
