“Tragic Building Collapse in Bhayandar: One Dead, Four Injured, and Dilapidated Buildings Raise Concerns”

Tragedy Strikes Bhayandar: One Killed, Four Injured in Building Collapse

A tragic incident unfolded opposite Bhayander railway station as a portion of a building collapsed, resulting in one fatality and leaving four others injured. The ill-fated structure, known as Navkirti Premises, had previously been categorized as dangerous and remained unoccupied. The deceased, identified as Durga Ram, had served as a cobbler at the nearby station.

The mishap occurred when Durga Ram was in close proximity to an auto-rickshaw when a wall of the compromised building suddenly gave way. While the auto driver quickly fled in the opposite direction, Ram instinctively rushed towards the collapsing structure, tragically losing his life in the process. He was promptly rescued from beneath the debris and taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival.

According to officials from the Mira Bhaindar Municipal Corporation, there are approximately 15 other dilapidated buildings in the vicinity that have already been vacated. The authorities have taken prompt action by initiating the demolition of Navkirti Premises, with plans to raze two additional hazardous structures in the area in the near future.

The injured victims, identified as George Fernandes (55), Harischandra Maurya (55), Indrajit Sharma (48), and Abid Ali (22), have been admitted to Tembha Hospital in Bhaindar for medical care and treatment.

Upon visiting the site, it was discovered that the collapsed building housed various commercial units, including bars and restaurants, printing presses, and cloth stores. Local shopkeepers revealed that they had received an eviction notice from the municipal corporation merely eight days before the unfortunate incident occurred. In response to the notice, these shopkeepers had begun the search for alternative locations to relocate their businesses.

Ashwin Patil, an employee at one of the affected printing presses, expressed shock at the incident, stating, “We had no idea that part of the building had collapsed. Only when the police came in and asked us to rush out did we realize that some accident had happened.”

Another shop owner, who wished to remain anonymous, shared the challenges they faced in relocating their business, saying, “We had shortlisted a shop nearby to shift our office, but we couldn’t do it due to the rain. What has happened is scary.”

Municipal Commissioner Dilip Dhole assured that the ongoing demolition of Navkirti Premises would be completed within a few days. However, this unfortunate incident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of proactive measures to identify and address dangerous structures in the area to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The authorities have launched an investigation into the building collapse to determine the exact cause of the incident. As the community mourns the loss of Durga Ram and prays for the speedy recovery of the injured, there is a growing concern among residents and shopkeepers regarding the safety of other aging buildings in the vicinity. Efforts to identify and take action against such structures have become an urgent priority for the local authorities.
