The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), responsible for guarding the India-Nepal border, has suspended an inspector and a jawan for alleged dereliction of duty in checking a passenger bus that entered India carrying Pakistani national Seema Haider and her four children. The incident occurred on May 13 in the border district of Siddharth Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, as the bus crossed over from the neighboring country to Greater Noida near Delhi.

Inspector Sujit Kumar Verma and Head Constable Chandra Kamal Kalita of the 43rd Battalion of SSB were the personnel responsible for checking the bus. The suspension comes pending a full inquiry into the matter, during which all aspects of the incident will be probed, including the roles of other personnel on duty that day.

The SSB initiated a basic probe after reports of Haider’s arrest in Greater Noida emerged. The force, being a paramilitary organization under the Union Home Ministry, is tasked with guarding the open 1,751-km-long India-Nepal international front on the eastern flank.

Due to the open border between India and Nepal, it is deemed “humanly impossible” to check and verify the credentials of each individual crossing over. Nationals from both countries can travel without a visa, making it difficult to ascertain the identities of people from India’s neighboring countries based on physical features and mannerisms.

Seema Haider, aged 30 and hailing from Pakistan’s Sindh province, stated that she came to India to live with her Indian lover Sachin Meena (22) in the Rabupura area of Greater Noida. While she was arrested on July 4 for illegally entering India without a visa through Nepal, Meena was also arrested for sheltering the illegal immigrants. However, they were both granted bail by a local court on July 7 and are currently living together with Haider’s four children in Rabupura.

Haider expressed her desire not to return to Pakistan and claimed to have adopted Hinduism. The couple had initially met in 2019 through the online game PUBG.

The SSB officials declined to comment on the development, and a full court of inquiry is set to begin to investigate the matter further.
