In a bizarre twist on the common impersonation scam, Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma recently shared a funny yet concerning experience of receiving a WhatsApp message from a scammer pretending to be — himself.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Sharma posted a screenshot of the scam message, where the fraudster introduced themselves as “Vijay Shekhar Sharma” and casually asked if he was at the office. Amused by the irony, Sharma wrote, “Impersonating myself to me,” which quickly went viral and sparked a wave of humorous reactions across social media.
One user quipped, “Impersonating ka tarika thoda casual hai,” poking fun at the scammer’s casual approach. Others highlighted the seriousness of such scams, warning how many people fall victim to these impersonations. Another commenter joked, “Ask him what cashback you can get on Paytm UPI,” while one drew parallels to the Bollywood film Karthik Calling Karthik by saying, “Vijay calling Vijay.”
Despite the humor, experts caution that impersonation scams remain a serious threat. To protect users from falling prey to such scams, WhatsApp recently released safety tips, including:
- Pause and Think: Be cautious if someone rushes you, demands trust, or asks for sensitive details like your PIN or passwords.
- Stop Suspicious Conversations: If a contact’s behavior raises red flags, hang up calls or stop replying. Never share personal or financial information without verifying identity.
- Block and Report: Immediately block and report suspicious contacts and keep your privacy and security settings up to date.
Vijay Shekhar Sharma’s experience is a reminder that scammers are becoming increasingly creative — but staying alert and cautious remains the best defense.
