“Samsung Issues Warnings to Striking Workers in India Over Pay Cuts and Potential Termination”

Samsung Warns Striking Workers in India of Pay Cuts and Termination Risks Amid Escalating Labor Dispute

Samsung Electronics has issued a stern warning to its striking workers at a home appliances factory near Chennai, India, stating they will face wage cuts and possible termination if protests continue. The escalating dispute began on September 9, when hundreds of employees disrupted work to demand higher wages and recognition of a union at the facility, which generates approximately one-third of Samsung’s $12 billion annual revenue in India.

In an email sent by Samsung’s HR team, the company labeled the strike as “illegal” and stated that employees would not be entitled to wages for the duration of the protest. “You shall not be entitled to wages from 09.09.2024 to the date you report back to work on ‘No work No Pay’ basis,” the email read. Additionally, it warned that if workers did not return within four days, they would need to justify why they should not be dismissed.

In response to the protests, Samsung filed a lawsuit against the striking union, seeking a temporary injunction to prevent sloganeering and speeches around the factory. However, a local judge urged both parties to reach a swift resolution to the conflict.

The workers, supported by the powerful labor group CITU, currently earn an average monthly wage of 25,000 rupees (approximately $300) and are demanding a raise to 36,000 rupees ($430) over the next three years. Discussions between Samsung management and the workers, along with state officials, have not yet resulted in an agreement, and Samsung appears reluctant to recognize any unions affiliated with national labor groups like CITU.

While Samsung has stated it is open to dialogue to resolve the issues, the situation remains tense as striking workers continue their protests. The company has not yet provided further comment regarding the ongoing dispute.
