Prime Focus, one of India’s leading entertainment companies, announced a ₹3,000 crore investment to develop a state-of-the-art ‘film city’ on a sprawling 200-acre site in Mumbai. The company signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government at the ongoing WAVES 2025 event, marking a major milestone in the state’s push for infrastructure and economic growth.
The ambitious project is expected to create a robust ecosystem for the entertainment industry, including high-tech production studios, live entertainment venues, theme parks, interactive experience centers, and leisure spaces. The development is projected to generate up to 2,500 jobs, offering a variety of opportunities in areas such as content creation, hospitality, tourism, and lifestyle services.
A Vision for Growth and Infrastructure
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis welcomed the initiative, framing it as a vital contribution to the state’s infrastructure development and economic growth. He emphasized that the project complements other large-scale initiatives, including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train, the Vadhvan Port, and the coastal road project, all aimed at transforming the region into a global hub for business and tourism.
“Growth, infrastructure development, and a sustainable future are all vital to the development of Maharashtra. As we continue to lead the way in massive infrastructure projects, I am glad to add the creation of this next-generation entertainment hub to the list of projects that are transforming our state,” Fadnavis said in a statement.
He added, “I look forward to working with Prime Focus and DNEG to create a world-class production and tourism destination, securing Mumbai’s position as a filmmaking and entertainment center of excellence.”
A Self-Contained Entertainment Hub
The proposed 200-acre film city will be designed to cater to the diverse needs of content creators, tech innovators, tourists, and entertainment enthusiasts. The facility will include:
- High-tech production studios with cutting-edge digital infrastructure for top-quality content creation.
- Live entertainment venues, including theme parks and interactive experience centers.
- Lifestyle and leisure spaces, such as shopping areas, restaurants, hotels, and residential spaces.
This vast complex will serve as a self-contained entertainment city, making Mumbai a focal point for global media and tourism.
Prime Focus’s Ambitious Plans
Prime Focus, founded in 1997 by Namit Malhotra, is the parent company of several renowned businesses, including DNEG, which has won eight Academy Awards for visual effects. The company also owns one of Asia’s largest studio spaces in Mumbai, equipped with Hollywood-style soundstages and state-of-the-art post-production facilities.
Malhotra highlighted the project’s strategic importance and its potential to elevate India’s entertainment sector. “We are not just developing the world’s foremost content creation center; we are creating a destination that presents India’s culture, our history, and our capabilities to the world,” he said.
His remarks were underscored by a sense of national pride, as the project aims to honor over a century of Indian cinema while showcasing the country’s soft power through innovative content creation and entertainment infrastructure.
The Future of Mumbai’s Film Industry
If realized, the proposed film city will not only enhance Mumbai’s global stature as a filmmaking hub but also attract tourists, global investors, and tech innovators, further fueling the city’s economic growth. The site is expected to become a magnet for both domestic and international content creators and entertainment professionals looking to capitalize on Mumbai’s thriving media industry.
The project is expected to break ground soon, and with its potential to reshape Mumbai’s entertainment landscape, it is set to play a pivotal role in elevating the city’s status as a global media and tourism destination.
