“PM Modi Launches ₹660 Crore Development Projects in Jharkhand; Congress Questions Government’s Commitment to Infrastructure and Religious Identity”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated a series of development projects worth ₹660 crore on Sunday, highlighting a major boost to infrastructure and housing in Jharkhand. The projects include the launch of six Vande Bharat trains and several railway infrastructure developments.

During the virtual event, Modi flagged off the new Vande Bharat trains on the Tatanagar-Patna, Bhagalpur-Dumka-Howrah, Brahmapur-Tatanagar, Gaya-Howrah, Deoghar-Varanasi, and Rourkela-Howrah routes. The prime minister also laid the foundation stone for the Madhupur bypass line in Deoghar district and the Hazaribag town coaching depot. Additionally, he dedicated the doubling of the Kurkura-Kanaroan line and highlighted the increased railway development budget for Jharkhand, now at ₹7,000 crore—16 times higher than a decade ago.

Modi further distributed sanction letters to 32,000 beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) and released the first installment of ₹32 crore for housing construction. He also virtually handed over keys to 46,000 PMAY-G beneficiaries nationwide, with Jharkhand receiving approval for 1,13,400 houses under the scheme.

In his address, Modi lauded Jharkhand’s progress and praised the government’s approach of “Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas” for fostering inclusive development. He emphasized the transformative impact of enhanced rail services on Eastern India’s growth, contrasting it with past neglect of regions like Jharkhand.

Congress Raises Concerns

In response, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh raised several critical issues regarding the BJP-led NDA government’s approach to Jharkhand’s development. Ramesh questioned the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure in the industrial city of Jamshedpur, highlighting poor transport connectivity and the lack of sufficient train services to major cities like Bhagalpur, Bengaluru, and Delhi.

Ramesh criticized the delay in the construction of Dhalbhumgarh airport, which was included in the UDAN scheme in 2018 but faced delays. Despite a memorandum of understanding between the Jharkhand government and the Airports Authority of India in 2019, the project had not materialized by the December 2022 deadline. The Congress leader criticized the central government for shelving the project and questioned why the “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” slogan had not translated into tangible results for Jharkhand’s infrastructure.

Additionally, Ramesh addressed the issue of Sarna faith followers in Jharkhand who are seeking official recognition of their distinct religious identity. He pointed out that despite a 2020 resolution by the Jharkhand Assembly supporting this demand, the central government had made little progress on implementing the Sarna Code. Ramesh called on Modi to address these concerns and clarify his stance on the issue.

As the debate continues, the focus remains on whether the government’s latest initiatives will address the longstanding issues raised by opposition leaders and bring about meaningful change for Jharkhand’s residents.
