Ola to Switch from Microsoft Azure to Krutrim Cloud After LinkedIn Controversy

In a recent announcement, Ola co-founder Bhavish Aggarwal revealed that the popular ride-hailing and electric vehicle (EV) company Ola will be transitioning from Microsoft Azure to its proprietary Krutrim Cloud. This decision comes in the wake of a controversy involving LinkedIn, a professional networking platform owned by Microsoft, and Aggarwal’s critical posts being removed.

Aggarwal stated that the decision to move away from Microsoft Azure was influenced by LinkedIn’s actions, where several of his posts were deleted due to alleged violations of “professional community policies.” This move signifies Ola’s shift towards more autonomy and control over its cloud infrastructure.

“Since LinkedIn is owned by Microsoft and Ola is a big customer of Azure, we’ve decided to move our entire workload out of Azure to our own Krutrim cloud within the next week,” Aggarwal stated in an X post. He also mentioned that Krutrim Cloud would provide a year’s worth of free cloud usage to developers who migrate from Azure, with a condition not to return to Azure afterward.

The controversy that led to this decision stemmed from Aggarwal’s criticism of neutral pronouns used by LinkedIn’s AI. He expressed his views on what he described as a “woke political ideology of entitlement,” stating that it does not align with Indian values. Aggarwal highlighted his concerns about being pressured into accepting certain ideologies and being censored for expressing dissent.

Krutrim Cloud, Ola’s proprietary cloud platform, takes its name from Sanskrit, meaning “artificial.” Aggarwal revealed that this platform is powered by a large language model (LLM) trained on over 2 trillion tokens representing sub-words used in conversations. The Krutrim AI chatbot’s website claims to possess a deep understanding of Indian cultural sensitivities and relevance, supporting all 22 scheduled languages and offering text generation capabilities for Hindi, English, and eight other Indian languages.

Ola’s move to Krutrim Cloud reflects a strategic decision to assert independence in technology infrastructure and uphold the company’s values in the face of external controversies. This shift also underscores the growing trend of companies opting for in-house cloud solutions to enhance control, security, and customization over their digital operations.
