Facebook and Instagram Experience Global Outage, Thousands of Users Affected

Social media platforms Facebook and Instagram, owned by Meta Platforms Inc., faced a widespread outage affecting thousands of users globally. According to reports from the outage tracking website Downdetector, over 18,000 users reported issues accessing Instagram during the outage period.

The data from Downdetector revealed that 59% of users encountered difficulties accessing the Instagram app, while 34% experienced server connection issues, and 7% encountered problems logging into their accounts. Downdetector gathers outage information from various sources, including user reports, to track disruptions in online services.

Users took to social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to express frustration over the outage. Many users shared screenshots of error messages indicating issues with loading pages or media on both Facebook and Instagram. Internet monitoring group NetBlocks also confirmed the outage, describing it as an “international outage” affecting Meta platforms, including Instagram and Facebook.

NetBlocks clarified that the outage was not related to country-level internet disruptions or filtering, indicating a broader technical issue impacting the platforms globally. On X, users reacted with humor and concern, highlighting the dependency on these platforms for communication and entertainment.

One user humorously remarked, “Wait, is Instagram down? I thought it was just me having internet issues?” while another expressed frustration, “How am I supposed to complain about my stomach hurting when Instagram is down?” Several users noted the frequency of outages on Instagram compared to other apps, reflecting on the platform’s reliability during such incidents.

Meta Platforms Inc. has not provided detailed information about the cause of the outage or the estimated time for resolution. The incident underscores the importance of contingency plans for users and businesses reliant on social media platforms for communication, marketing, and content sharing.
