“Odisha Allocates ₹9,200 Crore for Redevelopment of Four Major Healthcare Institutions”

Odisha Announces ₹9,200 Crore Investment for Redevelopment of Key Healthcare Institutes

In a significant move to enhance healthcare infrastructure, the Odisha government has announced an investment of ₹9,200 crore to redevelop four major medical institutions across the state. The decision, aimed at upgrading healthcare facilities and expanding bed capacity, was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling also attended the meeting.

As part of the redevelopment plan, four key medical institutions will undergo comprehensive transformations:

  1. VIMSAR Medical College and Hospital, Burla:
The government will invest ₹1,594 crore to redevelop this hospital. The upgrade will increase the hospital’s bed capacity from 1,485 to 2,861, significantly expanding its ability to serve the region’s population.
  2. MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur:
An investment of ₹1,014.13 crore will go into the redevelopment of MKCG Medical College. The hospital’s bed capacity will rise from 1,583 to 2,033, helping accommodate more patients and improving healthcare delivery in the region.
  3. Rourkela Government Hospital:
With an allocation of ₹627.16 crore, Rourkela Government Hospital’s bed capacity will increase from 437 to 763, further enhancing healthcare services in the area.
  4. Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar:
The largest chunk of the investment—₹5,958 crore—will be directed towards the redevelopment of Capital Hospital. The expansion will raise its bed strength from 750 to 2,582, making it a major healthcare hub for the state’s capital.

In addition to these new redevelopment projects, the Chief Minister also reviewed ongoing works at two other prominent healthcare facilities in the state:

  • SCB Medical College, Cuttack:
The redevelopment of SCB Medical College is being undertaken at a cost of ₹4,474.49 crore. The first phase of the project, expected to be completed by June 2026, will increase the bed capacity to 3,796, positioning SCB as one of the largest medical colleges in the region.
  • Acharya Harihar Post Graduate Cancer Institute, Cuttack:
This institute is also undergoing redevelopment with an investment of ₹895.89 crore. The ongoing work will expand the hospital’s capacity, increasing the number of beds to 1,127.

The ambitious healthcare redevelopment plan is part of Odisha’s broader effort to improve medical services and provide better care to its citizens. The state government’s focus on expanding healthcare facilities and upgrading infrastructure is expected to address the growing demand for quality medical care and strengthen Odisha’s healthcare ecosystem.

Once all redevelopment projects are completed, the enhanced infrastructure will not only improve the state’s ability to manage medical emergencies but also boost its capacity to deliver long-term healthcare services to its residents.

These efforts mark a pivotal step in Odisha’s journey towards strengthening its healthcare system, aligning with the state’s vision of becoming a leading healthcare hub in eastern India.
