Laurene Powell Jobs, the wife of late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, fell ill while attending the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on Tuesday. Powell Jobs, who arrived in the city on Monday after visiting the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, developed allergies on her second day at the event. However, despite her health setback, she expressed her intention to participate in the sacred ritual of taking a dip in the Ganga river.
Spiritual leader Swami Kailashanand Giri, who is hosting Powell Jobs at his ‘shivir’ (camp), provided an update on her condition. “She has some allergies. She has never been to such a crowded place. She is quite simple,” Giri told ANI. He confirmed that she was resting in his camp and would join the ritual at the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mystical Saraswati river.
The Maha Kumbh, a grand spiritual event that attracts millions of devotees, marks a rare celestial occurrence that happens once in 144 years. Powell Jobs, who is staying at the Niranjani Akhara camp, will remain in Prayagraj until January 15 before returning to the US to attend President-elect Donald Trump’s swearing-in ceremony on January 20.
The first Amrit Snan (sacred dip) on Tuesday saw an estimated 3-4 crore people taking part in the ritual at the Triveni Sangam. The Sadhus from the 13 Akhadas of the Sanatan Dharma also participated in the dip, following their respective traditions. The Maha Kumbh 2025, also known as Poorna Kumbh, will continue until February 26. Key dates for the sacred dips include January 14 (Makar Sankranti), January 29 (Mauni Amavasya), February 3 (Basant Panchami), February 12 (Maghi Purnima), and February 26 (Maha Shivaratri).
This year’s Maha Kumbh is one of the largest religious gatherings globally, with millions of people from all over the world participating in the spiritual and cultural festivities. Despite the challenges posed by her health condition, Laurene Powell Jobs’ decision to engage in the sacred dip highlights the significance of the Maha Kumbh for many spiritual seekers.
