IIT-Delhi Develops World's Lightest Bulletproof Jackets: Capable of Stopping AK-series Bullets

In a groundbreaking achievement, researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi have successfully developed the world’s lightest bulletproof jackets, boasting the capability to halt eight bullets fired from an AK-series rifle. Weighing in at just 8.2 kilograms, these innovative jackets are more than 2 kilograms lighter than the ones currently employed by the Indian Army.

The collaborative effort between IIT Delhi and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has yielded remarkable results after 15 years of dedicated research. These advanced jackets are expected to offer enhanced protection and mobility for soldiers on the battlefield.

Professor Naresh Bhatnagar, associated with the Centre of Excellence on Personal Body Armour at IIT Delhi, disclosed that the initiative was spurred by a request from an Army Major in 2008. The Major, who had experienced combat firsthand, emphasized the need for lighter bulletproof jackets to enhance operational efficiency on the frontlines. The previous jackets used iron as their primary material, resulting in cumbersome weights of 22 to 25 kilograms.

The newly developed jackets utilize a combination of polymer and ceramic materials, resulting in a significant reduction in weight without compromising on protection. The comprehensive research process involved the efforts of 25 M.Tech and 12 Ph.D students, who contributed to various aspects of the project.

Dr. Hemant Chauhan, a senior scientist at IIT Delhi, explained that the jackets underwent rigorous internal testing. “We fire ballistic bullets using gas guns to carry out the tests,” he elaborated. The bulletproof jackets have even received approval from the Bureau of Indian Standards, highlighting their credibility and effectiveness.

Anticipating their potential impact, the IIT researchers are planning to showcase these revolutionary jackets at an upcoming NATO conference in Germany. Their hope is that these advanced gears will soon be safeguarding the lives of Indian soldiers, furthering the nation’s commitment to enhancing the safety and efficiency of its armed forces.
