Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, is planning to establish his own company town in coastal South Texas, dubbed “Starbase,” a move that could redefine the future of corporate living. The founder of SpaceX, Tesla, and X (formerly Twitter) has long been a figure of influence, and his latest vision is to build a municipality to support SpaceX’s growing presence in the state.
The idea of creating Starbase comes amid Musk’s relocation of his business operations from California to Texas, which he cited as a response to California’s “woke” policies. Musk’s decision to move SpaceX’s headquarters from Hawthorne, California, to Texas was spurred by opposition to legislation proposed by California Governor Gavin Newsom, which would restrict schools from informing parents if their children use different names or pronouns. Musk has been vocal about his discontent with California’s political climate, stating that the new law was “the final straw.”
In response to the changing landscape, Musk’s SpaceX expanded rapidly in South Texas, where the company has established a launch site known as Starbase. Since July, this site has become home to many SpaceX employees. These employees have taken significant steps toward turning Starbase into an official town by filing a petition for an election to create a municipality.
Currently, Starbase is a small, close-knit community, with about 500 inhabitants, including 219 primary residents and 100 children. Nearly all of these residents are SpaceX employees who rent properties in the area. The proposed town would cover 1.5 square miles, slightly larger than New York City’s Central Park, and would include essential amenities for the workers and their families.
Creating Starbase as an official town requires the support of a majority of residents and voters. If the petition is successful and the town is incorporated, it will give SpaceX greater control over the region and streamline the process of building necessary infrastructure. “Incorporating Starbase will streamline the processes required to build the amenities necessary to make the area a world-class place to live,” said Kathryn Lueders, Starbase’s general manager, in a letter to the county.
However, not everyone is on board with Musk’s plans. Environmental concerns have been raised by locals, with a group called Save RGV filing a lawsuit against SpaceX for alleged environmental violations, including dumping polluted water into the nearby bay.
If the town is approved, SpaceX’s security manager, Gunnar Milburn, is expected to serve as the inaugural mayor of Starbase, making it the first company-controlled municipality of its kind in the United States.
Musk’s vision for Starbase is a bold one that could reshape the relationship between business, governance, and community living. If successful, it could become a model for the future of corporate towns and the integration of work and living spaces.
