In the aftermath of a widely circulated video capturing passengers dining on the tarmac at Mumbai airport, the Civil Aviation Ministry has imposed significant fines on IndiGo and the airport authorities. IndiGo faces a penalty of ₹1.20 crore, while Mumbai Airport is fined ₹90 lakh.
The penalties, issued by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) for IndiGo and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) along with BCAS for Mumbai Airport, come in response to the viral footage depicting passengers sitting on the tarmac and having food after their flight was diverted. In addition to IndiGo and Mumbai Airport, Air India and SpiceJet have also been penalized for various violations.
IndiGo, one of India’s leading airlines, was hit with a penalty of ₹30 lakh by BCAS, while Mumbai Airport received fines of ₹60 lakh from both DGCA and BCAS. The penalties were enforced after the ministry issued show cause notices, citing concerns about the lack of proactive measures to address the security threat posed by the incident.
The incident in question unfolded when IndiGo flight 6E2195, facing diversion, landed at Mumbai airport at 11:21 pm on Sunday. Passengers were allowed to disembark onto the tarmac and then proceed to flight 6E2091, the subsequent leg of their journey. The aircraft was assigned a remote bay (C-33) instead of a Contact Stand, which is designed for walking passengers to and from the aircraft from an allocated boarding gate.
This deviation from standard procedures left the weary passengers stranded on the tarmac without access to basic facilities such as restrooms and refreshments at the terminal. The video footage shed light on the chaos and inconvenience faced by the passengers, prompting the Civil Aviation Ministry to take swift action against both the airline and the airport authorities.
IndiGo, in response to the fines, stated that it had already initiated an internal inquiry into the incident. The airline assured that it would respond to the notice as per protocol.
As the aviation industry grapples with challenges like flight delays due to fog, the incident has underscored the importance of ensuring passenger safety and well-being during unexpected situations, prompting regulatory bodies to take a strong stance against lapses in security and passenger comfort.
