In an astonishing display of indulgence, a food lover from Bengaluru spent an eye-watering ₹5.13 lakh during a single restaurant visit in 2024, earning a special mention in Zomato’s year-end report. The food delivery giant, which recently released its annual insights on the dining and ordering habits of Indians, highlighted the jaw-dropping expense as one of the most interesting statistics from the year.
Zomato’s 2024 Insights
Zomato’s 2024 report delves into the country’s food consumption trends, with a special focus on how dining out and food delivery have evolved. According to the data, biryani continued its reign as India’s favourite dish, with more than 9 crore orders delivered in 2024. This translates to an impressive rate of three biryanis being ordered every second throughout the year.
As part of the dining out statistics, Zomato revealed that between January 1 and December 6, over 1.25 crore tables were reserved through its platform. One of the busiest dining days of the year was Father’s Day, when 84,866 people treated their fathers to special lunches and dinners.
Bengaluru’s ₹5 Lakh Dining Spree
The highlight of the report came with the mention of a Bengaluru foodie who spent a massive ₹5,13,733 in one visit to a restaurant. Although the identity of the diner remains undisclosed, this extravagant spending on food reflects the growing trend of luxury dining in major Indian cities. The fact that such a large sum was spent at a single restaurant visit also adds an element of surprise and fascination to Zomato’s year-end statistics.
Dining Trends in India: Biryani and More
When it comes to dining out, Delhi emerged as the city with the most budget-conscious foodies. Zomato revealed that Delhiites managed to save ₹195 crore on their dining bills through the platform. Although Bengaluru and Mumbai also saw significant savings, New Delhi took the lead in terms of total savings.
Biryani continued to dominate as the most-ordered dish on Zomato, maintaining its position for the ninth consecutive year. In 2024, Zomato customers ordered an astonishing 9,13,99,110 plates of biryani. Pizza came in second place, with over 5.8 crore orders placed across the country.
Tea also proved to be a consistent favourite, emerging as the most-ordered beverage of the year. Despite being a staple for many Indians, tea beat coffee by a small margin, with 77,76,725 tea orders compared to 74,32,856 coffee orders in 2024.
Conclusion
Zomato’s 2024 report showcases India’s evolving food culture, with a clear preference for biryani, an increasing appetite for luxury dining, and a love for tea. As the food delivery industry continues to grow, the statistics reflect not only changing consumer behaviour but also the increasing diversity in how Indians are enjoying their meals, both at home and in restaurants.
