Applied Materials Seeks Karnataka Government's Nod for R&D Lab Establishment in Bengaluru

In a significant development for the semiconductor industry, Applied Materials, a leading US-based semiconductor equipment manufacturer, is seeking approvals from the Karnataka government to set up a Center of Excellence for innovation and a dedicated Research and Development (R&D) lab in the Whitefield area of Bengaluru.

The discussions between Applied Materials and the Karnataka government were led by M B Patil, the Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development in Karnataka. During the meeting, officials from the company expressed their interest in establishing these facilities and requested the government’s support in expediting the pre-construction approval process for the R&D lab.

One of the key topics discussed during these deliberations was the critical role of various chemicals and gases essential for the semiconductor ecosystem. Additionally, the ease of doing business in the region and the government’s support for such initiatives were highlighted as crucial factors for the success of this venture.

Applied Materials India, represented by senior executives, engaged in discussions regarding the establishment of a Center of Excellence for innovation. They underscored their commitment to collaborate with the government in enhancing Karnataka’s semiconductor ecosystem through skill development and other initiatives.

This move follows Applied Materials’ recent announcement of a significant investment plan totaling USD 400 million over the next four years. The investment is directed toward the establishment of an engineering center in Bengaluru, further solidifying the company’s commitment to advancing semiconductor technology in the region.

The discussions and potential establishment of the Center of Excellence and R&D lab signal a significant stride in the semiconductor industry’s growth and development in Bengaluru, reinforcing the city’s reputation as a hub for cutting-edge technology and innovation.
