Air India has announced its plan to establish a Basic Maintenance Training Organisation (BMTO) in Bengaluru to address the growing demand for skilled aircraft maintenance engineers as the airline expands its fleet. The BMTO will offer a 2+2-year Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) programme, certified by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
This move is part of Air India’s broader strategy to build a future-ready aviation ecosystem and ensure a steady supply of highly trained engineers. The training facility will be set up in collaboration with Bengaluru Airport City Limited (BACL), a subsidiary of Bangalore International Airport Limited, and will occupy a purpose-built space spanning 86,000 square feet at Bengaluru Airport City.
Expected to be operational by mid-2026, the facility will feature modern classrooms, state-of-the-art laboratories, and expert trainers. In the interim, Air India will continue its Cadet AME programme in partnership with respected institutions in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, ensuring a continuous flow of qualified candidates.
Sunil Bhaskaran, Director of Air India’s Aviation Academy, emphasized that the BMTO will ensure engineers are trained to meet Air India’s specific standards. The proximity to Kempegowda International Airport will provide cadets with real-world experience, preparing them for the airline’s growing maintenance needs.
The programme will also offer career advancement opportunities, including specialized pathways for graduates, as well as partnerships with universities to allow students to pursue bachelor’s degrees alongside their engineering training.
This initiative reflects Air India’s commitment to creating a self-reliant workforce and supporting its ongoing transformation, further solidifying its position as a key player in the aviation industry.
