Indian Building in Surat Overtakes Pentagon as World's Largest Office Complex, Set to House Diamond Trading Centre

Surat, Gujarat, has now gained global recognition for hosting the world’s largest office complex, surpassing even the iconic Pentagon in the United States. The state-of-the-art building, known as the Surat Diamond Bourse, is set to become a pivotal hub for the gem industry, revolutionizing the way diamonds are cut, polished, and traded.

Stretching across 35 acres of land, the 15-storey Surat Diamond Bourse features nine interconnected rectangular structures, forming a massive complex that will house over 65,000 diamond professionals. Among them are cutters, polishers, and traders, making it a “one-stop destination” for the bustling diamond industry, which constitutes 90% of the world’s diamond cutting.

The impressive structure boasts over 7.1 million square feet of floor space, a testament to the grandeur and scale of this architectural marvel. The complex aims to cater to the diverse needs of the diamond trade, providing ample space for offices, recreational zones, and parking areas, covering an area of 20 lakh square feet.

The vision for this groundbreaking project was initiated by the SDB Diamond Bourse, a not-for-profit organization formed under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013, aimed at promoting and establishing the Diamond Bourse in Surat, Gujarat. Following an international design competition, the esteemed Indian architecture firm Morphogenesis took charge of designing the state-of-the-art building.

The inauguration of the Surat Diamond Bourse is scheduled to take place in November this year and will be graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The construction of this remarkable complex took four years, culminating in a landmark achievement for the gem capital of the world.

Speaking with enthusiasm, Mahesh Gadhavi, the CEO of the project, highlighted how the new building complex would immensely benefit the diamond industry by providing a local platform for professionals to conduct their businesses. No longer would thousands of people have to commute to Mumbai by train daily, as the Surat Diamond Bourse offers a centralized and efficient solution for the diamond trade.

It is essential to note that the Surat Diamond Bourse has already witnessed substantial interest and support from the diamond industry, as diamond companies purchased all offices in the building before its completion.

The Surat Diamond Bourse stands as a testament to India’s prowess in architectural and economic advancements and solidifies Surat’s position as a global leader in the diamond trade. As the world anticipates its official inauguration, the Surat Diamond Bourse is poised to become an influential force in shaping the future of the gem industry.
